Boobies, horny dudes, crazy aliens, exploding dinosaurs, and Muscle Rider, come on, what else could you want from the world of Gantz, a pure crazy-psycho-head trip. The golden rule holds true once again and this just blows the anime version out of the water. I mean, the manga practically had a naked chick holding a crazy gun every time a new chapter would begin, how awesome is that?
Anyways, to those unfamiliar to the world of Gantz here is a basic explanation.
- Gantz (a bald man on life support in the center of a black ball) forces people who have recently died to participate in a “game.”
- They are given a target (usually some crazy looking alien) they must kill in an allotted time.
- Gantz provides them with a strength enhancing skin-suits, guns and radar to help them accomplish their mission.
- If they complete the mission they are awarded a certain number of points based on their performances (how much they killed).
- Despite how injured (chopped off legs, arms, etc) a person is, if said participant is still alive in any way, they will return in perfect health, lost arms and legs after the mission is completed.
- Once the mission is complete and if they are still alive, participants are allowed to go back to the normal world (even though they had died) and must regularly participate in the missions until they can achieve 100 points in which they can leave the game.
If you’ve seen the anime and wondering what volume to start to where the anime left off, it’s volume 8.
Well no need for a summary, since it would take slightly forever. But for the most part Kei gets a new kick of motivation as he finds out that there is a third option when he reaches 100 points, to be able to revive anyone that had died previosly playing the game. So he decides no matter how long it will take he will get back his friends. This is weird as when he does begin to do so he revives someone completely unexpected.
There are a whole bunch of people that come and go as the missions progress. I especially loved the Ghetto African Americans that got to play. What a classy bunch with their stereotypical slang. They didn’t last too long. One important new guy is Izumi. This guy went balls to the walls and practically massacred the entire city to get “back” into the game.
Impressions – The two chicks above agree this manga was pure kick ass. Great story, great characters, and great art. Great sex scenes? They’re definitely there.
Kei improved so much as a character as he became the leader of the group doing his best to get everyone to survive the missions, soon everyone looking up to him, a position he never was in before, as everyone thought he was just some guy who jacked off in class all day. And he did, to his teacher, who wasn’t that great looking in the first place, what a sick guy.
I highly advise if you can stomach the massive amounts of over-the-top violence (yes heads will be popping off) and completely useless nudity and sex scenes then I would suggest you give this a try.

Gantz just gets repetitious after a while. The novelty of the randomness of the plot (MINOR SPOILER: like the faction of vampires that suddenly appears to harass the Gantz crew) and the alien designs just wears off when the missions pretty much remain the same in terms of execution… everything goes pretty well until the team finds themselves either incredibly outnumbered or outmatched and barely pulls off the mission. The fanservice and sometimes over-the-top nature of the manga can only do so much before one gets bored with the fact the missions are never vary.
True, but the missions don’t make the story, the characters do. While a more variety of missions would be appreciated, … getting away from the formula of blowing up aliens is probably not going to happen anytime soon … though the [spoiler: mission to kill Kei's girlfriend] was a bit different.
You need both the missions and the characters to make the story work, and Gantz never really excels at either for any sustained amount of time. The characters, as interesting as they can be at times, aren’t that good enough to carry the story, which is stuck in a rut of mission arc -> proportionally smaller character development arc -> mission arc. The effect of the plot twists get subdued.
Gantz is a decent read, but if I want fanservice and action I’d turn to either Tenjou Tenge or Ikki Tousen which don’t try too hard and don’t stumble around like Gantz does. If I want the complete package – service, action, story, and characters – I’d go old school with either Shirow or Sonoda.
Gantz takes an open mind, and a love for seinen manga.
The character development is quite amazing but to be expected from Oku Hiroya. Although there is alot of violence and explicit content the artwork is just amazing and sure to be given respect.
I must admit the beginning of the manga feels a little dull because the characters personalities are not the greatest, but the psychological aspect of Gantz is the best. as any character can die (how important they are or not) it truly is an exciting read!
I recommend it.
Yo, i’ve been reading the latest Gantz manga and seen the anime. Gantz is great, so for those who can take on some gore and nudity. THIS IS THE MANGA that will not DISSAPOINT YOU!!! GANTZ=GREAT!!!
Oku Hiroya is really one of the greatest manga authors!!! (yo Hiroya if you see this message, i would like to say that i’m really greatfull!!! (^.^)
Gantz is my favorite series. I’ve been into it for years and have yet to find a manga series that gets so much emotion out of me. I highly recommend it. To say that it gets repetitive is to overly critical. Why? Because if you ever analyzed any series you would find that consistency is one of the most important parts of any story. Especially among these genres. The aliens vary a great deal actually. Without the missions the story wouldn’t really progress. It also has a feeling as if it is very well planned out.
well gantz relies on a stable of senseless violence while lacking a common goal or point if you really want a good anime with blood try inyuasha but if you want naked girls ikki tousen would be sure fire while maintaining a good story balanced with fighting if you want a really good show with occasional gore blood and hot girls while being scary try higurashi no naku koro ni or in english when the cicadas cry or if you want everything bleach would be good
Gantz removes all clichés and never ends like you want it to end, for example [spoiler: nobody succeeds in ending izumi's massacre]
That would’ve happened in any manga nowadays, except for gantz, also, around chapter 294, the story suddenly gets a boost [spoiler: last mission of gantz ever] and afterwards the story will go to the purpose of gantz, 297 chapters were needed to finally bloom up into a plot.
The average public won’t understand Gantz, you need to think about it to realise it’s beauty.
