Once in a while Naruto Shippuuden musters up some good episodes; this is one of those times. Having not read any of the Naruto manga and just filling up on my usual crappy Shippuuden episode of the week for the tiny bits of story I usually get, I was blown away by how good this one-hour special was. Gone are the overt attempts of stretching five minutes of story into a 20 minute show. Everything from the pacing, music, and overall values was just spot on, usually uncommon for the series.
First off, I couldn’t help but be reminded of Spock from the new Star Treck movie while watching young Kakashi. They both stick to the book without fault, lacked any form of emotion in decision making and they both eventually give up that stick-to-the-rules mentality! Kind of cool huh?
As for Obito, he is one of those characters you love to hate at the beginning, but in the end wish didn’t have to go. They really did a good job developing him in such a short time. While he was a complete failure as a ninja as far as I am concerned, he had some pretty good values in regards to friendship.
Their medical ninja Rin was okay. All she did was get captured. As for their captain Minato Namikaze, he was quite cool for the little bit of air time he got, nothing too special.
What I especially liked was the whole giving Kakashi a present for his promotion in the beginning coming full circle. Though predictable to most people, as I don’t really like to over analyze every scene or every word said on the spot, I loved how Obito, who was the only one who did not give a Kakashi a present, offered his left eye as his gift at the last moment.
Finally Obito’s last words were wonderful, saying he wished he could enjoy his new friendship with Kakashi after all this time fighting each other, how he couldn’t bring himself to confess to Rin, and that he wanted more time to remain with them both. Oh what a bitter sweet ending.
