Night Wizard – 01

Um, what in the world did I just watch? Anyways, the first five minutes were somewhat confusing as we see Hiiragi entering what has to be the Earth’s atmosphere … in nothing but his school uniform. What? Last time I checked things burn up when entering the atmosphere, oh well whatever.

Summary

Next scene we have this red headed chick materializing the Gunner’s Broom, a huge rifle along with a huge bullet round to go along with it. She’s in a dark red world, with skeletal monsters surrounding her. At this point Hiiragi Renji falls from the sky right into the pack of the monsters. He materializes a sword and begins to fight along with the girl. They are the Night Wizards and the opening song begins to roll.

Elis is a new transfer student. During her first day she is taken in by Kureha, member of the astronomy club. We learn that Elis is living on her own, since both her parents are gone.

Later that night, as Elis is about to sleep in her apartment, she sees the moon has turned a deep red. She loses control of her body and something has begun to draw her to the school grounds. Kureha who has also noticed the change in color of the moon spots Elis walking aimlessly towards the school grounds. At the grounds there is an old Sakura tree. Elis approaches the tree and it begins to emit a bright light. From the light emerges a mysterious yellow orb.

At this point an Emulator (it’s a monster, they should just call it as such) emerges from a portal on the ground. Kureha tells Elis to stand aside as she materializes a crossbow on her arm, and thus the fight begins. During the battle it seems as though Elis also has her share of powers, as she summons a shield to protect her. Hiiragi again (where the hell did he come from) drops down from the sky to assist in the battle and needless to say the monster is killed off.

Impressions – Not good, not that bad either, nothing out of the ordinary with the first episode. Don’t really know, it was better than the first episode of Blue Drop at least, so I’ll give it some credit, but really that isn’t saying much. Animation was pretty decent, though I would have a better impression of the animation if the file size was larger. Overall one of those shows you have to give a few more episodes before giving it the boot. I see some potential with the action scenes, if anything, so that’s good. Other than that, I could see this being one of those shows no one will watch for this season, ala Kaze no Stigma and Gigantic Formula.
