One Piece – Movie 8

A One Piece movie that offers nothing new for its fans and at the same time newcomers should avoid completely.

A simple remake of the Alabasta storyline, Luffy and crew are caught in a country in the midst of a civil war, both sides mislead by Crocodile and his goons to fight each other, each side believing in what they are doing is justified.

Due to the vast story the movie has to cover from the original source, just expect the plot to fly by with things making little-to-no sense. Good luck trying to figure out what’s going on if this is your first One Piece related media. However I must admit the main over-arching storyline is still intact, it’s everything else that might throw you off. Your enjoyment of the movie may vary depending on how much you already know.

I was pleased to see the initial introduction with Nico Robin (otherwise known as Miss All Sunday in the movie) again. Back a couple of years ago when I watched this arc for the first time I thought Nico Robin was such a badass character, especially with that crazy cowboy getup she was wearing all the time. Now she is less badass (due to being relatively weak power wise) and just more cool.

Fight scenes are cut to the bare essentials. One character might look absolutely fine at the moment, and five seconds later is on the verge of death. What happened between those five seconds you figure out. This is what happens when the movie has to fit 30 episodes of the original arc into an hour and a half movie; things just have to get cut, even at the expense of anything making any remote sense.

I do have to give the movie some credit; they handled the latter end of the movie very well. The opening scene with Pell and Vivi’s conversation about why Pell keeps fighting was incorporated into a very moving scene at the end of the movie. Even the very end scene with Luffy’s departure was very well done; it still had the same emotional impact on me as it did years ago.

I cannot recommend this movie to anyone, fan or not. You could better spend an hour and a half watching something else instead of wasting your time with this.
