Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 – 10 – At the Crossroads

There were two possible outcomes at the end of the tunnel and I am glad they chose the one that didn’t ruin the series for me.

The first outcome revolves around someone actually pointing out to Mirai that Yuuki is either dead or that she is talking to no one at all. This episode is very close to going into that direction with all the new characters Mirai comes into contact with and the numerous moments they have to question Mirai’s weird behavior in regards to Yuuki. As much as my cynical side would have preferred Mirai to lose all sanity if someone had pointed out that she was talking to no one at all, I think the show chose the better outcome.

By allowing Mirai to finally admit to herself that Yuuki is dead, the show resonates on a much deeper emotional level for viewers. You can see as the episode progresses Mirai is breaking down bit by bit as she is having a hard time trying to keep Yuuki in her world during scenes they are not alone together. As Mayu and Itsuki would come into scene, Mirai is having a hard time justifying Yuuki’s existence. You could see that she is trying so hard to keep Yuuki alive in her mind by having him appear the very moment they are alone. Holding back her tears proves to be quite a challenge in itself also.

Mirai’s subconscious has created this Yuuki in order to protect herself from losing all sanity and helping her to continue on with her journey to find her parents. By allowing Mirai to finally face the truth through herself, Mirai will have a much easier time moving passed this tragic event while remaining mentally stable and not feeling guilty for failing to protect her brother. Yes I’m rooting for Mirai finally. She has turned around quite a bit from her initial character.

If I had to nitpick a bit, the whole focusing onto the plant Yuuki planted in the first episode was getting out of hand. No offense it’s a plant for crying out loud. There’s very little importance or any connection at all, asides from the fact Yuuki planted it a while ago. It’s alive and he’s not? I don’t know. The other things they use in remembrance of Yuuki; the drawings on his chair, the pictures he drew of his family crossing that bridge he loved so much, and his diary are much more appropriate.

The creepiest screenshot I’ve taken so far. Tell me that’s not creepy.

On a mini side note, when you look at Mirai’s flash back, Yuuki is treated inside a tent, as they are checking his blood circulation and trying to get oxygen into him. This means half of episode 8 is fake to begin with. The nurse asking Mirai for Yuuki’s medical history is fake and the whole concept of Yuuki ever having surgery is fake too, well played.

Your thoughts?

Are you happy how they handled Yuuki’s passing revelation or would you have preferred a more direct approach with someone pointing out the obvious to Mirai.

What are you predictions for the last upcoming episodes? Something happy or somber?

  • I can’t make to much of a prediction regard episode 11. But I will say that Mari may play a more central role as she has Yuki’s backpack. That backpack seemed to have some significance in the prior 2 episodes, almost as if Mirai was using it as a means to keep Yuki alive.
